Entrepreneurial Foundations

The Lean Startup

Eric Ries

The VMT Review

This is one of the most influential books in modern entrepreneurship and remains a useful introduction to validated learning, minimum viable products, Build-Measure-Learn cycles, innovation accounting, and the decision to pivot or persevere. Its major weakness is that founders sometimes reduce it to slogans and interpret “minimum viable product” as permission to release a poor product. It is strongest when read as a book about disciplined learning rather than speed alone. The official book materials describe its central purpose as helping startups test assumptions, create validated learning, and discover how to build a sustainable business.

What the Reader Will Learn

Founders learn to treat the startup as a search under uncertainty rather than a smaller version of an established company. Mentors learn to ask whether product development, marketing, hiring, and fundraising are producing evidence or merely activity. The book provides a foundational vocabulary for experiments, MVPs, actionable metrics, pivots, and learning velocity.
